New Frontiers Program
“Cut plug a herring, keeping most of its scales and power mooch at 30 pulls, trolling with the tidal current, ready to set the hook and adjust the drag on the single action reel.”
What? Say that again.
If this all sounds like Greek to you, you’re not alone. Oak Bay Marine Group Northern Resorts has come up with the perfect answer — the New Frontiers Program.
If you’re not familiar with saltwater salmon fishing, self-guided halibut and salmon fishing is still a viable option and a great way to enjoy an entirely new BC fishing experience. All you need is general knowledge of boat operation and a comfort level being out on the water. We’ll help you out with the rest. Our Fishmasters and crew are chosen for their halibut fishing and salmon fishing expertise and knowledge of the area and are there to help.
Every trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands and Rivers Inlet begins with a basic orientation seminar. Guests who are unfamiliar with salmon fishing will receive this orientation as well as a more in-depth seminar by the resort Fishmaster. Oak Bay Marine Group Fishmasters are "Super Guides" who know the resort’s waters like no others in the area. They know the techniques, depths, and locations that have produced the best results both in the past few days and in the previous years.
The Fishmaster will lead new guests out to the fishing grounds, pointing out strategic locations and significant landmarks in the area and help guests get started. During the next few hours, he’ll cruise through the boats, giving suggestions and offering help to those who need it. He will be around for Q & A in the evening, helping guests get tuned up for the morning tide the next day.
Depending on weather and water conditions, the Fishmaster will also lead a bottom fishing trip to coincide with slack tide for those interested in broadening their fishing experience. Throughout the trip, you’ll get additional instruction and attention.
At the Oak Bay Marine Group resorts, you’re never alone on the water. You’re always within radio distance from the resort, the Fishmaster and the other guests. It’s fishing your way — on your own schedule, with your own fishing partner and using whatever methods you want. After all, it is your own halibut and salmon fishing adventure.
Upon returning to Vancouver, BC, you’ll know that you need to bait your hook with the herring, keeping as many scales as possible to add flash and visibility. You’ll know to use your boat speed to adjust the angle of your line, forcing your bait to rise and lower in the depths with the tidal current. You’ll also be able to set your hook in the mouth of the fish and adjust the tension on your line to bring the fish in safely. You’ll be a saltwater halibut and salmon fishing graduate and have the fish boxes to prove it.
