62 pounder caught at The Slide

King Salmon Resort - July 27, 2006

Rivers Inlet king salmon fishing lodge Persistence certainly paid off for Barry Gruber when he landed his 62 lb Chinook, setting a new season record in the process.

All of the other boats had gone in for pre-dinner cocktails when Barry arrived at the dock with a new respect for the fighting power of this incredible fish. Hooked just this side of ”The Slide,” about ten minutes from the resort, it took an hour before it was in the net. They ended up directly in front of the resort on the outgoing tide. Seventy feet of water, fifteen pulls of line were the magic numbers. This is what makes Rivers Inlet great: the knowledge that everyday there is always the chance to catch your fish of a lifetime.

We seem to have found a decent halibut hole close to the resort. Directly across from the resort we have been getting consistent returns from “The Cabin.” All nice size fish, over twenty pounds, with Jim Hoy bringing in the largest at 92 lbs. The best time seems to be the last three hours of the flood. Fish in 140 - 200 feet of water, close to shore.

Tight Lines,
Fishmaster Rob
