First 50 pounder at Kilbella Pt

King Salmon Resort - July 17, 2006

Rivers Inlet Chinook fishing - 51 lberEarly fishing remains strong near King Salmon Resort at the head of Rivers Inlet. Six Chinook over 30 pounds (Tyees) caught by our latest group of weekend warriors. The biggest was a pair of 38 pounders.

Kilbela Point remains the most consistent producer, with a good tide producing six or seven quality fish. Two stray halibut were picked up there on Thursday — 30 & 40 lbs. — while mooching for salmon. This fishing is literally minutes from our docks!

Trips out to the mouth of Rivers Inlet have produced mixed results. Coho — averaging 6 to 8 lbs. — have started to show up at the Wall and Draney Inlet. Chinook action remains slow out there, but there is lots of bait showing so it can only get better as we get into more favorable tides. There are also lots of small halibut out near Ocean Bight.

Since the last report, we've also had our first 50 pounder of the season. Jim Matson became Masterfisheran #1 with his 51 lb. Chinook caught at Marker 16.

Tight lines,
Fishmaster Rob
