King Salmon is off to a great start to the 2006 season. The Chuckwalla/Kilbella run is well underway, providing good Chinook fishing right around the resort. Hotspots include Kilbella Point, McAllister Point, the Slide and Whale Rock. All of these locations are under 15 minutes from the dock and the inlet has been flat calm for the past two days.
As expected, the average size of these fish is on the large side, with a fair number of Tyees on the catch board including a 38 lb beauty picked up yesterday at Kilbella Point. The average size of King Salmon Chinook is in the high 20’s right now with very few fish under 20 lbs on the board. Not bad for the first trip of the season!
The “hot rods” of the trip have been Mike & Norm Watling. They hooked in to five solid Chinook yesterday including a double header and then landing another double header about an hour ago. Not bad for a couple of Rivers Inlet rookies!
The mouth of the inlet has been a solid producer of halibut in the teens and low 20's. On Monday morning every boat that chose to fish for halibut hooked up.
Coho fishing really hasn't started to heat up yet at the Wall, but the first big runs of these great fish should be arriving any day now.
All in all our guests on this first trip are having a blast and catching some quality fish.
Thats it for now, tight lines and sharp hooks…
