Rivers Inlet Fish Report

King Salmon Resort - August 9, 2006

41 lb Chinook salmonThe fishing is picking up nicely near the mouth of the inlet. A good Coho bite happened yesterday at Cranstan Point. It was reassuring to see half a dozen boats hooked up at the same time.

These Coho are getting large, averaging around ten pounds, and the largest Coho was a twenty pound beauty caught by Brad Crement. The largest Chinook of the recent trip — a 41 pounder — was caught by Arlene Army.

The action is starting to build here in Rivers Inlet. Draney Inlet has produced some very nice Chinook on the falling tide near Wadhams Point. Halibut fishing was slower all around with the best results coming from Ocean Bight for chickens.

Fishing next to the resort, at the head of the inlet, continues to be a trophy fishery. This is the place to fish if you are looking for that fish of a lifetime. It requires patience and an eye for detail. You can not afford to have any flaws in your gear when hunting for these giants. These fish are not feeding at this point and tend to attack the bait out of instinct. The hit is seldom subtle, usually screaming out line before you can get the rod out of the rod holder. However you can wait all day for a hit. When the major run does arrive it is a true world class fishery, but the timing changes every year. Last year the peak was the last week in July, this year it may be the third week in August.
