Waiting for rain

King Salmon Resort - July 23, 2006

Rivers Inlet fishing lodgeKilbella Point has shown the most consistent action for Chinook and the odd halibut. Largest tyee of the group was a 38 ½ pound King caught by Patrice Smith. This was accomplished only an hour after taking a lesson from the fishmaster. Beginner's luck?

While the weather has been hot, the fishing has cooled off over the last few days. Reports up and down the inlet indicate that we are in between runs. Right now, everybody's waiting for a bit of rain to draw the fish in closer to the river mouths. Luckily, the Rivers Inlet weather forecast anticipates some rain by mid-week.

The top halibut was a 51 pounder from the mouth of the Kilbella River. My guess is the halibut come in on the rising tide to feed on the carcasses flushed downstream from spawned-out fish. The bite is on the last two hours of the flood.

While we wait for the rain, here's a fishing tip for you: always start the day off with new leaders and sharp hooks and check the last twenty feet of line for nicks and discard if necessary.
